Why encapsulate my placenta?
Some of the more common benefits reported may include:
Increased postpartum iron levels and other essential nutrients
A decrease in development of postpartum depression
The balancing of your postpartum hormones
Faster overall healing from birth
Increased milk supply
What about safety?
At Summer Birth Services, safety is a priority. Beyond the basic training for encapsulation, I have completed both a food handler safety course and a bloodborne pathogens safety course. Workspaces are cleaned and sanitized before, during and after the process. A 50% bleach solution is used, followed by a clean water rinse to remove any residue. All equipment is washed with hot, soapy water, rinsed, immersed in a bleach solution for 20 minutes, then rinsed with clean water to remove residue. These are standard protocols set by OSHA and the EPA for disinfection.
I have an STD, can my placenta be encapsulated?
Absolutely, no judgment here! I gladly work with all clients. If you have an infectious disease I require the placenta to be processed in your own home, with your equipment (most of which will already be in your kitchen). You will receive the same courteous and timely service as every other client, and your health information is always kept private.
What is the research on placenta ingestion?
“Giving…placenta to a new mother following birth has become standard protocol among a growing number of midwives in the United States. By nourishing the blood and fluids, endocrine glands and organs, Placenta will …reduce or stop postpartum bleeding, speed up recovery, boost energy and relieve postpartum blues.” Homes, Peter. 1993. Jade Remedies, Snow Lotus Press, 352.
“Powdered Placenta Hominis was used for 57 cases of insufficient lactation. Within 4 days, 48 women had markedly increased milk production, with the remainder following suit over the next three days.” Bensky/Gamble. 1997. Materia Medica, Eastland Press, 549.
