World Breastfeeding Week!

Saturday kicked off the first day of 2015’s World Breastfeeding Week! World Breastfeeding Week is the brain child of the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, which is a “global network of individuals & organisations concerned with the protection, promotion & support of breastfeeding worldwide.” This year, the focus of WBW is to support parents combining work outside the home and breastfeeding. In the US, in our current society, working outside the home is often a significant barrier to breastfeeding.

As both a doula and a La Leche League leader, I see that going back to work can be stressful for lactating persons, which is why we work to implement plans that lessen the struggle. Unfortunately, there is no universal fail-safe that works for everyone, because just like each birth is unique, so too is the breastfeeding relationship for each family.

In addition to the fabulous support provided by us, there are quite a few resources in the service area to assist you in lactation:

La Leche League of Rolla ~ LLL of Rolla meets the first Tuesday of every month from 11am-1pm, and the second Tuesday of every month from 5-7pm at WomanSpace . There is also a Facebook page and group.

La Leche League of Fort Leonard Wood/Waynesville ~ LLL of FLW/Waynesville meets the second Wednesday of every month at 6:30pm, at the Baymont Inn in St. Robert.

PCRMC ~ The Lactation Clinic offers inpatient and outpatient services, including access to a lactation consultant and weight checks.

WIC ~ Families who qualify for WIC can access lactation support through the local office, some of which have a peer counselor. Click here for Phelps/Maries County and here for Pulaski County.

Remember, whatever your goal is…3 weeks, 3 months, 3 years…exclusively one method or a combination…we’re here to help! Here at Summer Birth Services, the team works closely with your family to safeguard your lactating goals (whatever they may be). I’m fortunate to have trained professionals who are passionate about supporting lactating families! If you want to connect with one, please fill out the contact form, email nicole@summerbirthservices.com, or call 920-342-2558.
